Obsessions and Compulsions

ocd_1.jpg
What is OCD?

OCD stands for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.
You may find yourself needing to repeat certain routines over and over again to control the acute anxiety that happens when you don't.
Examples might be checking the door is locked several time before you can go to bed. (It might need to be a set number of times before you can feel you can move on to the next thing.) Or feeling you need to wash your hands many times a day - where others don't feel that need in the same situation.
You may find yourself compelled to complete unusual "rituals" - such as needing to tap a certain pattern/melody on your hand before replying to a question. Or only chewing in in odd or even numbers.

Generally, people who are suffering from this condition can feel that it is taking over their life.

There are ways of getting help.
Some professionals will view OCD as a separate condition to be treated.
Some will regard it as an essential part of who you are and will want to engage with you
You may be in a position to choose which method of help your prefer or you may have to take what's available to you.

There are some self-help leaflets around to help you support yourself. This may be all you need at the moment.
A good one is the one below, which can be downloaded and printed off for your own use.

These leaflets are available to download or copy in their entirety.
They were written by staff from Newcastle, North Tyneside & Northumberland NHS Tust The authors should be fully acknowledged in any reproduction and changes must not be made without their permission.
